[The interdependent circumstances of the 13 hair          strands in Kathok Monastery in Tibet]

Tathagatha Choje Ka Dampa Rinpoche’s succeser, Master Zongdunpa Dorje Jiansen propogated Kathok teachings. He had accomplished the virtue of the Immaculate 15 Stages of Lamrim in Vajrayana practice. His ability in giving teachings and clarifying difficult questions and points gained him respect from many masters. He served the Monastery until he was 90 years old. His successor was a manifestation of Vajrapani, the great accomplisher, the great Lord of Secret Jyanpabon. Danpa Rinpoche had prophasized that “ Jyanpabon only will benefit the sentient beings by his peaceful and compassionate activity”. He had perfected the virtue of learning from great masters. He had bestowed monastic ordination to thousands of monks. He had propagated both The Old and The New Translation Tantra teachings, especially the teaching that focused on [sutra, illusion, and mind]. He also converged and distilled the teaching from many masters such as Padmasambhava, Vimalamitra, and Berochana.

[Lord of Dharma, the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel, Kadanpa Rinpoch
Tsamdunpa Dorje Jiansen, Jyampabon]

There was a young man that was one of the monks that had received the monastic ordination from Jyampa Rinpoche, and his ordained name was Mani Rinchen. This young man was prophesied to be the protector of Choje Guru. Lama Jyampabon instructed him to travel to Tibet and became the student of Terton Guru Chowang. He accomplished learning and practicing on both the instruction and the empowerment on the extremely profound Terma practices. He received the prophasy that “if he is able to practice in secret with the Terton’s sister, wisdom Dakini Kongtrul Bongong, they will benefit Kathok teachings’. Therefore, both of them traveled to the foothill in Kathok. Master Mani Rinchen while in Kathok saw the one hundred thousand monks in the Monastery and thought “by bringing a woman, should I feel ashamed or should I confess”? Dakini Kongtrolben read his mind, and knew the interdependence

condition was not met, so she turned into rainbow and shoot up into the sky to Dakini Land. Mani Rinchen tried to grab her, but was only able to grab 13 strands of hair.
Mahasiddha Mani Rinchen then felt remorse for missing the auspicious circumstance. In Kathok, Mani Rinchen received teachings on illusion and mind training. He also had further expanded Guru Chowang’s profound Terma. While he was repairing Stupas of the past Kathok throne holders, he left a foot print on a rock in the monastery. He also used his saw to fly to a little hill like the wing of a bird and left a foot print there (the foot print is still clearly visible today). Later, Mani Rinchen spread the thirteen hairs over the corner of a hill on the left side of Kathok Monastery, and many QingJiang Tree grew from that place. Due to the auspicious circumstances, there were many events and incidents that had to do with the number thirteen in Kathok Monasteries. [The lineage of the thirteen Kathok Lamas], [The Thirteen Lineage of the Kathok Zongpa], and [ The Lineage of the Thirteen Kathok Mosa] were all related to the number thirteen. So with our up most sincere motivation, let us prostrate to the holy name of the great Thirteen Gurus of the [Lineage of the Thirteen Kathok Lamas], and listen diligently to the Thirteen Choje’s (King of Dharma) activities!

First Choje: Ka Dhampa Deshe Re Senge
Second Choje: Zongdunpa Dorje Jiansen Rinpoche
Third Choje: Great lord of secret Master Jhampa Bon

[Master Zongdunpa Dorje Jiansen]

[Great Lord of Secret Master Jhampa Bon]

BonThe previous father and son Choje received the prophecy that : “…received the name Boddhisattva Roju Nyinpo, Rowu Nyingpo, and Dawa Nyingpo in Dewachen, and became Enlightened in the Constallation Eon and were named Buddha Amitabha, Huose Rochei, and Senge Shunu”.

The Fouth Choje was Master Yeshe Ponpa. He perfected the great method in learning, contemplation, and practice, had a strong will to practice, and received signs of accomplishment. His name [Kathok Lama Uro Yeshe Ponpa] was renowned in many places. Sakya Choje during his trip to Mongol due to the invitation from Khan Hubelei, was especially invited by Yeshe Ponpa to bless a new temple in the area of Jianke in Payul. Yeshe Ponpa said: [ I will drive away the evil spirit with secret mantra from the Old Translation School while you bless the new temple with New Translation secret rites]. Kathokpa with his great wisdom and great power drove away the evil spirit in the new temple, and turned the temple inside out, while the Sakya Lama invited the Wisdom Deity and turned the temple back. This monastery still stands today.

The Fifth Choje: Master Senrong Ronpo
The Sixth Choje: Master Konga Ponpa
The Seventh Choje: Master Wangju Beh. He was very intelligent. He learned and contemplated completely on Vajrayana teaching and the teachings and empowerments of the Kathok Tradition. When he was 38, he began to give ripening instruction to the monks in Kathok for fifteen years. Most of the time he didn’t talk, and one-pointedly focused on his practice. He was like a mute in front of strangers, and thus was called [Chongku]. When the Nashi Army came to Kathok, his attendant reported the situation to him. He opened his mouth and said:[ please pile great amount of Tsampas on me!]. When the pile of tsampa reached his waist, it began to snow, and lasted for several days. The snow stopped Nashi Army from advancing, and they were forced to retreat. Later when the army knew the blizzard was due to the master’s power, they developed the mind of reverence, and offered gifts such as gold Buddha statue, glass Stupa, and ivory monastery. The golden canopy on Kathok monastery today was giving and built during that time.

The Eighth Choje: Master Jo Roju Senge. He perfected the practice of the ripening liberation of Mahayana Vajrayana. He propagated the teaching of the Magical Illusory Net Terma, and Ladzog Tu Terma.

The Ninth Choje: Master Changyu Roju. He perfected the virtue of wisdom, and practiced diligently the teachings from the lineage masters. He especially advanced the Old Translation Vajrayana Tradition, and his virtue of upholding the doctrine and teaching was vast.

The Tenth Choje: Master Changchub Senge. The master ordered [Protector That Rides the Lion] (one of the two manifestation of Protector Dorje Lekpa) to invite a Buddha statue to Kathok from India. This statue had the same power of blessing as the Statue of Shakyamuni in Adang Lhaburi Monastery. He ordered the [Protector That Rides the Goat] (the other manifestation of Dorje Lekpa) to make the life-like statue of Padmasambhava. His students had witnessed the master talking to the protectors with their own eyes.

The Eleventh Choje: Master Changchub Jiansen. He attained immeasurable wisdom, and had thousand of disciples. He diligently practiced The Old Translation School of Vajrayana. He was named the Lord of Secret and his activity was extensive.

The Twelveth Choje: Master Yeshe Jiansen. Guru Rinpoche had prophesized that: [when men’s age is reaching 50 years old, there is a place called Bubuodhi in the lower part of Eastern Kham. There is an individual named Yeshe Jiansen that was born with many auspicious signs. This is the time when Buddha dharma flourished again]. Just like the prophecy described, he mastered teaching, debate, and writing with no difficulty, had a firm grasp on Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana rules and vows. Like pouring water from one vessel to another vessel, he completed the practice on the [sutra] and [illusory] pith instruction on the Dzogchen blessing empowerments. He listened and practiced on [Ear Whispered Teaching], and personally taught thousand of stanzas in the texts and commentaries. He bathed in the four rivers of texts containing protector wrathful mantras that accomplish virtues and activities. He received the teaching on the [mantra, and pith instruction on the Nature of Mind and Phenomenon (Choyin)]. He collected all the teaching just like the convergence of all the rivers, and he also became the lord of the close transmission and pith instruction. He had personally seen Guru Rinpoche and his disciples, Buddha and his Sons, peaceful and wrathful yidams, dakinis, protectors, and the Hearers of the Hinayana Path.

He especially had personally seen Dakini Thrinley Wangmo (Activity Sky-Goer). He had practiced [The Bliss of the Sprout of Boddhicitta] in the Pureland of Great Bliss. He also had displayed miraculous signs such as hanging his monk robe on sun ray. He had composed <The Complete Explaination of the Vehicle of Kathok>, along with many other treaties. He had many students, and many of them became great practitioners. Hundred of them attended rainbow body. He and his student brought the School of Old Translation Vajrayana to the height of its day. When he was cremated after he entered Nirvana, his kapala has the images of Vajrapani. His joints displayed images of wrathful diety, and Avaloketeshvara. His tongue had the syllable Ah, his chest the five colored conch shell, and many relics were collected. Not one being was without faith to him. He now resides in the Pureland of Great bliss with the name Boddhisattva Dhefe Nigu.

The monastic tradition was passed to twelve disciples, and there were many main holders and heirs to the Great Perfection Lineage. Along with Master Zhadewa Rangzang Dorge, the manifestation of the The Lord of Three Family, they were both called the [The Lineage of The Thirteen Kathok Gurus].
The thirteen lineage masters were all the manifestation of Manjushri, Vajrapani, and Avaloketeshvara. Everyone who has listened to the holy name of the [Thirteen Kathok Gurus] now is making auspicious connection with the Kathok masters, and in return will receive immeasurable blessing. Let us dedicate the merit we received from this auspicious circumstance, and the immeasurable blessing we received to the sentient beings that have not been liberated. May this auspicious connection lead the sentient beings forever escape the sea of suffering, and ultimately attain the State of Great Perfection.
